But a Malibu couple's struggle to build an ADU shows how local governments are standing in the way. Jason and Elizabeth Riddick have been trying to build an ADU in their backyard in the pricey coastal enclave since July 2020. So they applied for a permit from the city to build a small ADU and a minor addition to their existing house. So the Riddicks sued the city and in July 2022, a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge sided with the couple. Again, the city appealed the decision, this time to the state supreme court this month.

AdvertisementTikTokers are striving to "normalize" flying in economy, fighting back against influencers who make out that first or business class is the only way to travel. "Normalize flying in economy," the content creator Hybee, who covers beauty and lifestyle, wrote as the caption of a recent video. Flying business class wasn't "worth the extra cost" to Elizabeth and her boyfriend, she said, because they would rather spend that money on the actual vacation. Advertisement"Don't let anybody make you feel bad for not flying business or first class, because we're all going to the same place anyway." While some noted that economy travel is already "normalized" because most people do it, others appreciated the candor.

Biden signed into law a bill allowing student-loan borrowers who combined balances with a spouse to separate their loans. They wouldn't owe payments, and if approved for administrative forbearance, their interest rates would be set to zero. Brigid, a 55-year-old borrower with spousal loans, told Insider she's experienced a similar dilemma. However, because of the strict nature of spousal loans, she would also have to meet the hardship requirements by, for example, also having cancer in order to receive the deferment. But she's been unable to receive administrative forbearance, and she's frustrated borrowers with spousal loans are blocked from opportunities federal borrowers are receiving.

The research found this was due to a perception that other accents thwart communication, to accent prejudices — or both. Are language courses a solution? But accent reduction courses that promise to get rid of a certain accent in a short period of time are more popular, she said. It horrifies me that companies would train people to anglicize their accent — that is a direct reinforcement of … racism. Elizabeth likens learning an American accent to "just one of the tools" in her arsenal — one she can deploy when needed.

[1/5] Britain's King Charles speaks to guests during a reception for overseas guests attending his coronation at Buckingham Palace in London, Britain, May 5, 2023. It will be the largest show of its kind in Britain since the coronation of Charles' mother. Once at the abbey, much of the ceremony will feature elements that Charles' forebears right back to King Edgar in 973 would recognise, officials said. Handel’s coronation anthem "Zadok The Priest" will be sung as it has at every coronation since 1727. After returning to Buckingham Palace, the royals will make a traditional appearance on the balcony, with a fly-past by military aircraft.
A school club in Tennessee tried to put a flyer that defined the word "transgender" in November. But the principal of Northeast High School rejected it, a 17-year-old member of the club said. After the poster was rejected, Elizabeth came up with other ideas in an effort to get the word out about Transgender Awareness Month. Elizabeth said the experience raised her awareness about the extent to which trans rights are threatened in the state of Tennessee. The Tennessee law is part of a wave of legistion focused on trans people largely fueled by anti-LGBTQ sentiment in the United States.
British Prime Minister Liz Truss on Wednesday accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of making "saber-rattling threats" to cover his failed invasion of Ukraine, as she told the United Nations that its founding principles were fracturing because of aggression by authoritarian states. In her first international speech since becoming prime minister two weeks ago, Truss hailed the founding principles of the United Nations, while calling for new international alliances to circumvent the influence of authoritarian regimes. She also called for a toughening of the West's response to Russia's invasion. To Truss, a Conservative free marketeer, that means cutting individual and corporate taxes and slashing regulations for business. Despite the economic shockwaves, Truss said Britain's commitment to defending Ukraine "is total."
